Why would I engage in therapy?

If this is the first time you’re considering therapy, or if you’ve thought about it for awhile but were hesitant to engage because the thought of sharing personal information with someone you don’t know sounds intimidating, this is extremely common! Whether you’re experiencing a challenging time/situation in your life or have recognized certain behaviors or emotions have become unmanageable; therapy is designed to foster a comfortable, safe and confidential space to address or work through a variety of life’s challenges with a professional therapist.

What should I expect from therapy?

Life is TOUGH! In the world we live in now, people just do not have the time or energy to invest in years of therapy. What people want are solutions, and they want them FAST! Your therapist will work with you to come up with an individualized plan of care to help you reach your goals, using proven therapeutic strategies. You will know you are feeling better over time as the need for therapy diminishes and your goals are being met. The range of issues are large, but most importantly, any issue which hinders your life, your self image or your relationships, can be a basis for treatment.

How long does each therapy session take?

Sessions are 45-55 minutes long. Part of the first intake session is spent gathering background information and completing paperwork. Then you and your therapist will discuss your concerns and develop a treatment plan. Most sessions are scheduled weekly for best outcomes.

What services do you offer for children?

We offer individual and family therapy for children, as well as play therapy. We have our therapeutic playroom as a resource for your child to engage and therapeutically express themselves through play. The playroom offers your child a safe and creative space to work through some issues and barriers they are experiencing, and allows parents and clinicians insight into your child's processing and imaginative world. Explore our space for further details and photos of our therapeutic playroom.

Do you also treat couples and treat families?

Do you run groups?

Coastal Connecticut Counseling periodically offers specialized groups! Please click on the Current Groups tab located on the top left side of our website or call our main office to get more information.

If my child is a client, will I be able to discuss their care with the clinician?

Yes, parents/legal guardians are strongly encouraged to be part of their child’s therapy. Your child’s therapist will provide parents/legal guardians with important information about this during the initial parent intake session, which occurs before your child’s initial session.

What if I don’t think my clinician is the right fit?

Goodness of fit between a therapist and client is an essential element of therapy! If you don’t feel comfortable or are having difficulty developing trust with the therapist selected, we encourage clients to express this to their therapist as not every connection made is always a guaranteed match! However, should a client not feel comfortable expressing this to their therapist, please don’t hesitate to contact our main office and speak with one of our office managers.
